Our Story

Founded on Deliberate
Legal Thinking

Stonehelm was established in Kuala Lumpur by a team of practitioners who believed the legal profession benefited most from depth rather than breadth. In the years since founding, the firm has developed meaningful experience in three areas: mining and mineral rights, elder law and guardianship, and venture capital and private equity transactions.

Each of these areas demands its own vocabulary — regulatory frameworks, community considerations, family dynamics, and investment timelines do not overlap neatly. Stonehelm's approach is to develop genuine fluency in each area rather than treating them interchangeably.

The firm's clients range from mineral exploration companies navigating licensing requirements to families managing difficult transitions, and from first-time fund managers to established private equity groups seeking reliable counsel. What connects them is an expectation of careful, clear, and direct advice — and that is what Stonehelm aims to provide.

Our Mission

To provide focused, honest legal counsel in our chosen practice areas — helping clients understand their position, manage their obligations, and reach their objectives through sound legal process.

Our Approach

We take on matters we are well-placed to handle. We communicate directly. We explain what we are doing and why. And we treat the trust clients place in us as something to be earned and maintained throughout an engagement.

Our Values

Honesty in all dealings. Thoroughness in preparation. Patience with complexity. Respect for the people involved in each matter — clients, counterparties, and communities alike.

Our Standards

Professional Conduct
and Quality Protocols

Malaysian Bar Membership

Stonehelm and all practising advocates are members of the Malaysian Bar, regulated under the Legal Profession Act 1976. Professional conduct standards are observed at all times.

Client Confidentiality

All matters are protected by legal professional privilege. Client information is handled with strict confidentiality and is not disclosed without express authorisation.

Engagement Letters

Every client engagement is formalised with a clear engagement letter describing scope, fees, and responsibilities — so expectations are set before work begins.

Diligence and Review

Legal work at Stonehelm undergoes internal review before delivery to clients. Documents and advice are assessed for accuracy and completeness by a second qualified practitioner.

Data Protection

Client data is managed in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (Malaysia). We limit data collection to what is necessary for each engagement.

Continuing Education

All practitioners participate in continuing professional development programmes, maintaining current awareness of legislative changes and developments in their areas of practice.

Legal Services in Malaysia

Specialist Legal Counsel
for Substantive Matters

Malaysia's legal landscape spans a range of industries and personal circumstances requiring specific, knowledgeable guidance. Mining and mineral rights in Malaysia involve engagement with the Department of Minerals and Geoscience, state land offices, and the Environmental Quality Act — each with procedural requirements that benefit from advance preparation and experienced navigation.

Elder law and guardianship matters under the Mental Health Act and the Guardianship of Infants Act call for sensitivity as much as legal knowledge. Stonehelm works with clients to understand what an individual or family actually needs before advising on the most appropriate legal mechanism — whether that involves a lasting power of attorney, a court-appointed guardian, or a carefully structured estate plan.

Venture capital and private equity transactions in Malaysia frequently involve Securities Commission registration requirements, Securities Industry Act considerations, and cross-border structuring where foreign investment rules apply. Stonehelm's familiarity with these frameworks allows clients to move through transactions with clarity rather than uncertainty.

The firm operates from Kuala Lumpur, serving clients across the peninsula. Stonehelm does not take on matters outside its areas of focus — this is a deliberate choice that allows for consistent quality and genuine expertise rather than a broader but less considered service.
